Day 023. Continuously strive for self-improvement

MBOT official website

It’s the 4th straight day of our Chinese New Year break. Honestly, it was not a productive day for me to deliver or complete any of my official tasks. It’s supposed to be OK since it’s still an off day. But that’s my nature, I love to work, be active, and be productive.

I only started to be my real me after dawn. I decided to work on my Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) professional membership. I need to renew my membership for this year, just like I did for my IChemE, BEM, and IEM memberships a few days ago.

I attempted to renew, but it seems the process needs to be reviewed first and take some time. Personally, I think IChemE, BEM, and IEM process the renewal better, faster, and right on the spot. I have just now updated some of my CPD in my MBOT dashboard. I think now, I just have to wait for them to process my renewal.

What is MBOT?

The Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) is a professional regulatory body established by the Malaysian government to oversee the registration and certification of technologists in the country. It is responsible for setting standards and guidelines for the education and training of technologists and maintaining a register of certified technologists.

The board also plays a role in promoting the professional development of technologists and in protecting the public by enforcing ethical and professional standards among its members. I joined MBOT in 2017 and became a Professional Technologist in early 2018.

Why should we be Professional technologists under MBOT?

Being a Professional Technologist under the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) can have several benefits. Some of these include:

  1. Professional recognition: Holding a Professional Technologist (P.Tech) certification from MBOT demonstrates to employers and clients that an individual has the knowledge, skills, and experience to work in their field of expertise.
  2. Career advancement: Having a P.Tech certification can improve an individual’s job prospects and open up new career opportunities.
  3. Professional development: MBOT provides various opportunities for professional development to its members, such as workshops, seminars, and conferences.
  4. Professional ethics: MBOT promotes and enforces ethical standards among its members, which helps to protect the public and maintain the integrity of the profession.
  5. Networking: Being a member of MBOT gives individuals the opportunity to connect with other professionals in their field and to stay informed about developments in their industry.
  6. Legal compliance: In Malaysia, it is mandatory for certain professionals in the engineering and technology fields to be registered with the MBOT in order to practice legally.

Which is more important — being a professional engineer under BEM or a professional technologist under MBOT?

Both Professional Engineers under the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) and Professional Technologists under the Malaysia Board of Technologists (MBOT) have their own importance and relevance in the engineering and technology industry.

A Professional Engineer (PE) is a highly qualified and experienced engineer who has demonstrated the ability to practice independently, manage projects, and is responsible for the safety and welfare of the public. Engineers registered with BEM are responsible for designing, supervising, and inspecting the construction of buildings, infrastructure, and other engineering works.

While a Professional Technologist (P.Tech) is a person who has completed a higher diploma or degree course in engineering, technology, or a related field and has at least 5 years of working experience in their field of expertise. Technologists registered with MBOT are responsible for applying engineering, science, and technology to problems in industry, business, and government, and are involved in the design, development, and implementation of new technologies and products.

In summary, PEs are responsible for the safety and welfare of the public while P. Techs are responsible for applying technology and engineering to solve industrial problems.

Both registrations are essential to practice legally in certain fields and it also depends on the individual’s career goals and the specific industry they want to work in.

Other official tasks of the day (CNY 2nd off-day actually):

  • Checked my undergraduate research student dissertation and paper — thermodynamic analysis.
  • Checked my Engineering Education Ph.D student chapter 4 progress.
