Day 020. Getting involved in the engineering community

IEM Website and an encouragement for its member to renew their membership

I have been a member of the Board of Engineers, Malaysia (BEM)Professional Engineer with Practising Certificate (PEPC) and the Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) since 2016 and 2006, respectively. Both are important for me as an engineer who strived to continuously improve my professional career.

What is BEM?

The Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM) is a professional regulatory organization for engineers in Malaysia. It is responsible for registering and regulating engineers in the country and setting and enforcing standards for engineering practice.

BEM also serves as a liaison between the engineering profession and the government and works to promote the development and advancement of engineering in Malaysia.

What is IEM?

The Institution of Engineers, Malaysia (IEM) is a professional organization for engineers in Malaysia. It is a non-profit organization that represents engineers in various fields, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering.

The IEM’s main objectives are to promote and advance the engineering profession, to provide opportunities for professional development and continuing education, and to serve as a forum for the exchange of ideas and information among engineers. The IEM also works to promote the use of technology and engineering practices that are sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Why do we have to renew our professional membership under BEM and IEM?

Both BEM and IEM require engineers to renew their membership every year in order to maintain their professional status and stay current with the latest developments in the field.

BEM, being a regulatory body, renewing membership every year ensures that the engineers are still in active practice and their licenses are current. Additionally, by renewing their membership, engineers are able to access the resources and services provided by the organization, such as continuing education opportunities and networking events.

Renewal also helps organizations to maintain accurate records of their members and to ensure that they are in compliance with any regulations or standards set by the organization.

The cost of BEM PEPC renewal for me is RM400, while for IEM it is RM155. Six days ago, I also renewed my Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE), UK membership for a cost of nearly RM1,200. I can say it is costly to maintain all of these memberships, but it is important and worth it. Why IChemE? Simply because I am a Chemical Engineer :)

What are the benefits of becoming a member of BEM, IEM, and IChemE?

There are several benefits to becoming a member of BEM, IEM and IChemE for engineers in Malaysia. Some of the main benefits include:

  1. Professional recognition: By becoming a member of BEM, engineers can obtain professional registration and be recognized as registered engineers in Malaysia. Similarly, by becoming a member of IEM, engineers can demonstrate their commitment to the engineering profession and be recognized as professional engineers.
  2. Continuing education and professional development: BEM, IEM and IChemE offer a variety of resources and opportunities for continuing education and professional development, such as training courses, workshops, and conferences.
  3. Networking and community: The three organizations provide opportunities for members to connect with other engineers and to collaborate on projects, which can be beneficial for professional growth and career development.
  4. Representation and advocacy: BEM and IEM work to represent the interests of engineers and the engineering profession at the national level, which can be beneficial for the members. The same goes for IChemE but from a global perspective.
  5. Access to resources and information: As a member, you’ll have access to a wide range of resources, including technical publications, standards, and guidelines, which can be beneficial for staying current with the latest developments in the field.

Overall, becoming a member of BEM, IEM and IChemE can provide many benefits to engineers in Malaysia, including professional recognition, opportunities for continuing education and professional development, and access to a community of fellow engineers.

Other official tasks of the day:

  • Still working on the Review Paper
  • I filled up the referee form for a new Ph.D student registration
  • Accepted two more review invitations.
