Working in My Brand New Office
Day 050. New place, a new adventure, a new beginning
I work as a lecturer at a public research university in Malaysia. The 7 tasks of a lecturer are (1) teaching (2) research (3) supervision (4) writing (5) publication (6) consultancy and (7) community service.
However, I have more tasks on top of the 7 above. In 2019, I became a research fellow for the Centre for Engineering Education (CEE). In 2021, I was appointed as the Director for CEE.
It is an administrative position and I have to manage plenty of things besides doing my best to fulfill the Key Performance Index (KPI) of CEE. There is a lot of extra stuff to think about, strategies to plan, and decision-making to be made.
Last Thursday we moved into CEE’s new office. It’s a newly renovated office and I have my new office as the Director. My office is connected to a huge meeting room and my personal assistant space.
My own new Director’s office is located at the far end of the 60-meter building. It’s super secluded from civilization (other staff). It’s good if I want to focus but also can be boring too.
My new office was arranged and decorated by my other half last Thursday. We are yet to include the soft furnishing and decoration. That will come soon.

New Doctor Was Born
Earlier today, I attended my Ph.D student’s VIVA at the Faculty of Chemical and Energy Engineering main office. The VIVA which took 2 hours and 30 minutes was smooth and my student earned a B1 correction, which is a minor correction.
The student was initially supervised by my very diligent colleague, Dr. Muhammad Tahir. However, the Ph.D student, Mohammed Omar was transferred to me as the main supervisor in January last year after Dr. Tahir migrated to UAEU.
This is indeed wonderful news for Mohammed Omar as he has worked extremely hard to complete his Ph.D in 3 years. He will return to Libya next month after completing his correction. He is my first Ph.D graduate after I was promoted to Associate Professor.
