TEDxUTM, My Due Diligence as the Advisor
Day 007. Masquerade: Unmasking the Hidden Truths
I first about TEDxUTM a few years ago. In my opinion, it is very good that a group of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students who became the TEDxUTM committee organized such a brilliant event through an event such as the world's well-received TED Talk. Before I proceed further, let's first comprehend what is TED Talk and TEDxUTM.
What is TED Talk?
TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a media organization that posts talks online for free distribution. TED’s mission is to spread ideas, usually through short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED Talks cover a wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture, often through storytelling.
They are influential videos from expert speakers on education, business, science, tech, and creativity, with subtitles in 100+ languages. Idea sharing and learning are at the heart of TED. The organization is dedicated to sharing ideas worth spreading. TED is a non-profit global foundation devoted to ‘ideas worth spreading’.
What is TEDxUTM?
TEDx is designed to give communities and individuals the opportunity to stimulate dialogue through TED-like experiences at a local level and shape the future of the community. Therefore, TEDxUTM brings together leading individuals that are pursuing inventive solutions in any discipline to spread their ideas within the UTM community.
TEDxUTM2023 Quest
I was approached and appointed to be the official advisor for TEDxUTM as an official society at my university, UTM, in 2022. It was a surprize and also an honour to be requested to be the Advisor of, which to me is a prestigious society. TEDxUTM2023 provides a chance for speakers from all around Malaysia to showcase their creativity, ideas, and solutions to the students of UTM in relation to our theme of ‘MASQUERADE: UNMASKING THE HIDDEN TRUTHS’.
Every year TEDxUTM will be organized and a number of fantastic speakers that comes from amazing background and expertise will be invited. Since I was appointed as an advisor last year, I am now experiencing the process of TEDxUTM2023 built up and involved a bit to a certain extent.
Paperwork for approval and sponsorship partner requests of the program were recently submitted to me for checking and approval. I’m very happy to help in whatever way I can. I hope that this coming TEDxUTM which will be organized in a face-to-face format after 3 years will be as successful or better than before. During the Pandemic, TEDxUTM has employed the virtual format.
I shall update here from time to time on the important progress made by this year’s TEDxUTM team. I hope and pray the leadership role by Hansreet Kaur Bhullar a/p Pagjit Singh (Chair), Edward Quek Jun Jie (Vice Chair 1), and Leong Lee Ying (Vice Chair 2) will yield a superb TEDxUTM program.
Just to share some info, last year, my other half, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mazura Jusoh was invited to deliver her TEDxUTM talk. It was great watching her prepared, rehearse and present for her talk, which was recorded in our home studio. At that time, I was not yet the advisor of TEDxUTM. Check out her presentation below:
