Day 003 . The power of work synergy

Scene of the workshop I attended today

I have attended and participated in so many workshops. Maybe hundreds of them already. However, before this I did not know the real reason or purpose of having a workshop. A colleague casually and cynically informed me last 2 years that a workshop is a place where you should do work, not just listen passively towards the person in charge. It’s quite embarrassing that I didn’t know the real function of a workshop, but I reserved that to myself, until now.

So, what is a workshop?

A workshop is a structured meeting or seminar in which people come together to discuss and work on a specific topic or project. These events can be designed to help people learn new skills, solve problems, or improve their knowledge in a particular area. Workshops are usually interactive, with participants participating in discussions, activities, or hands-on exercises. They can be held in person or online, and they can be of different lengths, from a few hours to multiple days. The goal of a workshop is usually to gain new knowledge or skills, or to address issues related to a particular subject or project.

There are several benefits of participating in workshops as part of your job. Some of the benefits include:

  1. Learning new skills: Workshops can be a great way to learn new skills that are relevant to your job or that can help you advance in your career.
  2. Staying up-to-date: Workshops can help you stay up-to-date on the latest trends and best practices in your field, which can be especially important in rapidly changing industries.
  3. Networking: Workshops can be a great opportunity to network with other professionals in your field and build relationships that can be valuable for your career.
  4. Improving performance: By learning new skills and staying up-to-date on best practices, you can improve your performance in your job, which can lead to increased job satisfaction and opportunities for advancement.
  5. Personal development: Participating in workshops can also be a way to grow personally and professionally, by learning new things and challenging yourself to try new things.
  6. Get things done: Often a particular project is huge and by having a workshop, we can gather people to sit in one place and focus on completing the project, basically getting the job done.
This is what today’s workshop is about

Today, my main official task was working in a workshop to improve my university’s teaching and learning process. The workshop was organized by UTM CDEX and held at Sunway Blue Box Hotel, Johor Bahru from 9am to 5pm. I’m glad to attend and work in the workshop simply because it is something out of my routine, I met new people which means building new network and exchanging new information, contributing to a good work product, and of course enjoying good foods. Most importantly all of the above tasks contributed and complimented my job scope as an educator.

My other tasks of the day:

  • Online meeting on our PhD Engineering Education program
  • Filled up the Grant Reviewer form
  • Reviewed a technical paper about steam reforming modelling

P/S: Follow me in Medium.
