Day 089. Safety Engineering Education should be empowered

The cover page of my slide presentation to SCEE RAE Team

I was asked to deliver a talk on our progress in safety engineering efforts since I was the Safety Champion in Engineering Education (SCEE) fellow under the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAE), United Kingdom, yesterday. The one-hour session was hosted virtually via the Microsoft Team platform, managed by Fatima from RAE.

Following is the brief of my sharing yesterday.

Brief Overview

It is imperative to have safety in our lives. Due to its immense importance, safety should be exposed to our youngsters and students. Most engineering curriculums from various universities introduce safety-related courses in the third and/or fourth year. Since safety is crucial, it is best to introduce safety engineering as early as possible to engineering students.

For the first time, the Faculty of Chemical & Energy Engineering from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), via the Introduction to Engineering (ITE) 3-credit course exposed first-semester chemical engineering students to authentic problems related to safety in their daily life in 2021.

The spirit is to provide an early introduction to the safety concept in life and work to the students and inculcate best practices when it comes to decision makings associated with safety. The teaching and learning process used Student-Centred Learning (SCL) and Corporative Problem-Based Learning (CPBL) techniques. The process has successfully exposed students to various safety-related cases and motivated students to creatively solve or reduce specific safety problems.

Outcome / Feedback

It was great to get questions and responses from participants. One of them mentioned that the efforts carried out by us (ITE lecturers) are commendable and very good. This was mainly because we conduct the teaching and learning processes in such a way that students can deeply learn and provide them with impactful and meaningful learning experiences.

Check out the following video which shows one of the team’s excellent presentations — showcasing their innovative solution for minimizing/reducing safety-related issues at home.

What do you think of the student’s video above? The students were first semester first-year chemical engineering students.

Other official tasks performed today:

  • Early today, my effort was mainly focused on the preparation of the slide presentation for the SCEE RAE sharing.
  • In the afternoon, I had a meeting with future to be Centre for Engineering Education (CEE) research fellows at our CEE office.
  • Sorted out our CEE Academic Manager person in charge.
